Think twice! Food Production accounts for one third of greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We\u2019ve all heard about climate change. Global warming, icecaps melting, sea levels rising\u2026 if all of this sounds very far away to you, you might want to<strong> take a look at what\u2019s on your table<\/strong>. Most of us, when asked who is responsible for climate change, would immediately blame fossil fuels, industrial production and those tall pipes emitting grey smoke 24\/7 on the outskirts of our cities. But what if we told you that <strong>what you eat is directly related to climate change?<\/strong> What if we told you that, in spite of what we repeatedly hear in the news, food production all along its chain (including agriculture) is responsible for one third of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How does climate change relate to food production and security?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/93252788@N00\/848546297\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\" title=\"Combine harvester [by bernat..., on Flickr]\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1041\/848546297_92d6268b5b_n.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Combine harvester [by bernat&#8230;, on Flickr]<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IU1-PpxqeZc\">food crisis<\/a>, <strong>feeding the world\u2019s population releases up to 16,000 megatons of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) into the atmosphere annually<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1146\/annurev-environ-020411-130608\">climate change and agriculture experts<\/a>\u00a0recently stated. Population growth (estimated to reach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/node\/18200618\">9 billion<\/a> by 2050) and the subsequent increase in food demand, as well as competition for depleting resources, are only some of the drivers of this imbalance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Climate change is considered a major challenge that also affects\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6KfvYjZ5fyw\">food security<\/a>. Temperature changes can have a negative impact on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ApJ4QCO_EMU\">crops<\/a>, and this can be crucial for communities\u00a0dependent\u00a0on climate-sensitive activities like agriculture. But the connexions go far beyond. Food production and agriculture require, amongst others, electricity, farm machinery, refrigeration and long distance transport &#8211; all of which contribute to GHG emissions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Measuring <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablefood.com\/Foodfootprint-What.htm\">food footprint<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The problem is, how do we measure and <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/ghg_data\/ghg_data_non_unfccc\/items\/3170.php\">calculate GHG emissions<\/a> from food products? GHG footprint of food production involves the combined emissions of all stages of food production \u2013 a chain experts have called <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ccafs.cgiar.org\/blog\/eating-local-good-climate-thinking-beyond-food-miles\">\u2018from fertiliser to fork\u2019<\/a><\/strong>. It includes manufacture of inputs like fertilisers, agriculture itself, but also food distribution and sales, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mark_bittman_on_what_s_wrong_with_what_we_eat.html\">use of food at home<\/a>, and how food waste is managed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7174\" style=\"width: 357px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unitedexplanations.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/From-fertiliser-to-fork.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7174\" class=\" wp-image-7174\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\" title=\"From fertiliser to fork\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/unitedexplanations.org\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/From-fertiliser-to-fork.bmp\" width=\"347\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From fertiliser to fork: the stages of food production<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The entire process involves <strong>pre-production activities<\/strong> (emissions derived from fertilisers and animal feed), <strong>production activities<\/strong> (direct and indirect emissions), and <strong>post-production activities<\/strong>, including processing, packaging, transport, refrigeration, retail activities, catering and domestic food management, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/tristram_stuart_the_global_food_waste_scandal.html\">consumer waste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are many different methods to produce food, which also depend on the geographical distribution of production. <strong>Distances food must travel<\/strong> in order to get to the market will affect the technology used in its production. Another factor that \u00a0must be taken into account is the refrigeration system: the \u201c<strong>cold chain\u201d<\/strong> used to extend and ensure shelf life of fresh and processed foods.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The pressing issue of food security<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In spite of the substantial increase in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grida.no\/publications\/rr\/food-crisis\/page\/3562.aspx\">food production<\/a> in the past century, markets, governments and <a href=\"http:\/\/focusweb.org\/node\/1366\">international institutions<\/a>\u00a0have been unable to guarantee adequate nutrition for all. Be that due to insufficient or lack of food supply, or to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/worldfoodsituation\/en\/\">price volatility<\/a>, food insecurity has become a pressing issue that the international community has been unable to tackle so far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The CGIAR report argues that the <strong>impacts of food production on climate change are crucial in determining future outcomes for food security<\/strong>. The degree of the impact depends on two factors: firstly, on the stage of the food production chain &#8211; the largest GHG contributions come from direct and indirect (deforestation and peat land degradation) emissions from agriculture. Secondly, the degree of impact is determined by economic factors such as national income: in high-income countries, post-production stages are more important, while in other countries specific or even country-specific \u2013 e.g. fertilisers &#8211; economic subsectors are most critical.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>It goes both ways<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/10816734@N03\/2183806066\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\" title=\"Sifting grain [by World Bank Photo Collection, on Flickr]\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2386\/2183806066_36657c5e2a.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sifting grain [by World Bank Photo Collection, on Flickr]<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As food systems have an impact on climate change, increasing human-induced GHG emissions, climate change also has an impact on food systems, both at the stage of production and post-production.\u00a0<strong>Climate change will affect food yields and food safety and quality, as well as the reliability of its delivery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As climate change has an impact before and after harvest, <strong>every step of the food chain is at risk<\/strong>. For instance, increased temperatures and flooding, which exacerbate challenges to food storage and distribution, may cause more outbreaks of food-borne illnesses. This spread of diarrhoeal diseases &#8211; which already kill 1.9 million people each year &#8211; and livestock-related diseases, will hit the poor in low-income countries hardest.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Exacerbating existing inequalities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The major problem is therefore the unevenness of the impact of climate change<\/strong>, especially on agriculture: poor people are more vulnerable to those impacts because they spend a greater percentage of their incomes on food. This makes them more strongly affected by food price increases. In addition, their incomes may decrease, because they are more likely to depend on the climate-sensitive sectors. Finally, since they have fewer assets,\u00a0their adaptive capacity is also reduced.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe climate during the rest of this century is very likely to become more variable (more droughts, more floods, more extreme events), and as a result, agricultural production may well become more variable, particularly in developing countries in rain-fed situations. This is one reason why it is so important to enhance smallholders\u2019 resilience and ability to adapt\u201d, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2012\/10\/qa-food-production-accounts-for-29-percent-of-greenhouse-gases\/\">affirms<\/a> Philip Northton, one of the researchers collaborating in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cgiar.org\/who-we-are\/\">CGIAR<\/a> (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The question is: <strong>Which way forward?<\/strong> Enhancing resilience by improving farmers\u2019 adaptive capacity seems to be the best option in order to reconcile food systems and GHG emissions\u2026 but it all starts with what you decide to eat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0<strong>This is a nonprofit explanation.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So you thought you weren&#8217;t contributing to climate change?
